 FAQs
Q. What does ‘Yoga’ mean?
A: Well for us yoga means a dream job and living your best life but that probably isn’t what you meant. Literally it means Yoke or Union and is about quieting the mind so that the body and spirit can be nurtured in stillness and coming back to union or centeredness with yourself.
Q. Can beginners attend classes?
A: Yes! Each class at Soula Power Yoga is taught to all levels. From baby beginner to experienced practitioner you can find a home here to practice. Note to beginners, CHILDS POSE is your best friend! You will be shown Child’s pose at your first class. USE it as often as you need to.
Q. Why is it hot in here?
A: We heat the studio to help get you deeper into the poses and to avoid injury and detox ourselves. Oh and we just really like to sweat. Yeah, your skin called, it wants that yoga glow!
If the heat is a concern for you or you tend to get dizzy, just pace yourself and go back to that child’s pose we were just talking about. Yoga is never a contest… be where you are on that day and do what you can.
DRINK lots of water before and after class!
Q. Is yoga a cardio workout? Does this mean I can get off the treadmill?
A: Well, we are delighted you asked. Not only is yoga cardiovascular but it goes above and beyond… we are talking full body workout here people! If you are a workout junkie, here’s more good information, Power Yoga started in the United States with Beryl Bender Birch as she helped the NY Runner’s Club train for marathons!!! Full disclosure, no sugarcoating – it is a tough workout. Totally accessible to anyone, but it will kick your ass. If you need to rest, you are welcome to take childs pose (you’ll learn what this is) until you can join back in. The only thing we ask is that you finish what you start – no leaving mid class. The pose sequence is deliberate and you don’t want to miss the bliss of savasana (corpse pose).
Q. OK I will come and sweat, what is this power yoga stuff going to do for me?
A: How much time do you have? For starters you will learn how to better handle the stress in your life, physical and mental strength will grow exponentially, you will increase blood circulation, flexibility, and you’ll even find that you sleep better!
Q. What should I wear/bring to class?
A: Remember it is going to be heated in the room so wear something that can get wet with sweat and still be comfy. Women should wear yoga pants (hey something else to do in them besides run errands), shorts, sports top, tank or jog bra. Men should wear shorts or bathing trunks. Also bring your yoga mat, towel and water (we have all of these clothes, mats, towels, h20 for sale and/ or rent in the boutique at Soula). Leave your shoes and your day in the cubbies in the foyer and bring your spirit to your mat! And for sure, leave your gum in the trash at the door.
Q:Â Can and will I lose weight doing power yoga?
A: YES! A regular practice along with a proper diet will MOST CERTAINLY transform your body (and the rest of your life too but we don’t have to tell ya, you’ll see and so will everyone else around you).
Q:Â Flexible is a 4 letter word in my book, I am not bendy nor do I want to be a pretzel person, is power yoga for me?
A: The pretzel thing is definitely a yoga myth that will be debunked by the end of your first blissful sweaty session. That four letter word you speak of (it’s actually 8 letters but we practice non-judgment here so you’re good) will come in time; it’s like clearing out all the cobwebs from your body. You are bound to move easier once we clean a little house!
Q: How often should I practice?
A: We love this question. It depends on your goals. The yogic rule of thumb is 3 times a week to change your body and 4+ to change your life.  The neat thing about yoga is that the more you practice the better your body feels so it will leaving you wanting more.
Q:Â Do you offer refunds if I buy a 10 or 20 class card and then can’t come to class?
A:Â Soula is uniquely different (in the good way) ; )Â Your class cards never expire and you can transfer them to another person if you can’t return.
Q:Â What about retail returns?
A:Â Â You may return within 15 days with a receipt for a store credit good on retail merchandise or yoga classes.
